The iconic Union Rooms, is once again on the market for a mere four million quid.
Two years ago Wetherspoons put the building on the market and it was snapped up by a property tycoon who leased it to a local leisure company, who chucked a fortune at it. The reason for the sale, is that they want to ‘diversify their portfolio’ – corporate speak for it isn’t profitable enough.
Although it’s not unusual for Wetherspoons to sell pubs, I imagine the reasons are purely financial and the new owners- lumbered with high running costs and lack of buying power of ‘spoons- have found it difficult to make trading worthwhile.
