The Salem Street boozer which used to be a favourite of students, locals and lecturers alike, fell on hard times when the university shifted its campus from Langham Tower/Ashbrooke.
I was only ever in the 19th-century boozer once in the late ‘90s. I remember being disappointed in the beer selection but being impressed by the wood-panelled interior and it’s the only pub I’ve been in that had bar skittles (that weird game on a pool table).
It closed in 2006, shortly after a guy was shot and killed in it after a case of mistaken identity. Now- like pretty much every Victorian pub- it is to be turned into apartments.
At least it didn’t catch fire.
